DIADEM Materials Discovery Grand Challenge
Publié le

The CAUSALI-T-AI project of the PEPR IA and the PEPR DIADEM are collaborating to create the DIADEM Materials Discovery Grand Challenge, which will be launched on October 17, 2025, in Grenoble.
The DIADEM Materials Discovery Grand Challenge aims to foster collaboration between students from various disciplines through an integrated and mixed approach. We want to create links between students studying machine learning, materials science, mathematics, physics, chemistry, and many other subjects, in order to stimulate new ideas and future collaborations. Our goal is to build a strong and dynamic community in the field of materials science that can flourish and actively contribute to the advancement of research.
Who is this challenge for?
This challenge is open to all students, regardless of their academic level (Master’s to Post-doctorate), as well as anyone with a passion for materials science. The hackathon will be held in English.
The Challenge: Improving material discovery through machine learning
Teams will receive various datasets related to materials science. The main challenge is to improve an existing machine learning model or explore new AI methods to solve a given problem. This is your chance to apply your skills, learn about new fields, and contribute to cutting-edge research.
What you will get: Access to relevant datasets, support from experienced mentors, and the opportunity to collaborate with a diverse and talented team.
Expected outcome: Each team must submit a report detailing their approach, the methods tested, the performance of the models explored, and the insights gained.
How does it work? A collaborative project
The challenge begins on October 17, 2025, in Grenoble. The project will then be conducted remotely.
Teams: Teams of approximately four students, ideally from different disciplines and different universities. We will do our best to group students from the same university together to facilitate face-to-face meetings, if desired.
Mentoring and support: Each team will be assigned a dedicated mentor, who will guide and supervise them throughout the project. If a mentor cannot answer a specific question, they can ask a mentor from another team for help. Teams will be free to organize their work at their own pace.
Online leaderboard: An online leaderboard will track teams’ progress, promoting healthy competition and allowing you to see how your results compare to others.
Awards and recognition: Although we are in negotiations with partners to offer awards, no official awards have been granted yet. However, the opportunity to collaborate with talented peers, acquire new skills, and contribute to cutting-edge research is already a considerable reward.
Master’s project: This project can serve as a semester project. However, this remains the decision of each university.
